So you want to blend fandom teas

With the new Game of Thrones Season 3 trailer out, I couldn’t resist.

Back in June of 2011, I thought it would be fun to blend some teas based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which had just taken off a few months before and became one of those crazy phenomena where college-aged bros were seriously, seriously into a show about ponies. Girl ponies.

As luck would have it, these girl ponies turned out to translate pretty well into teas, thanks to Adagio and Tumblr. So did the noble houses from Game of Thrones.

Heck, anything can be a tea. How?Let’s use Rarity as an example.

At first you think, “It’s a pony. A horse-thing with four feet and a sense of fashion, and occasionally a pseudo-British accent.”

And that’s exactly where you begin.

The Base: Pseudo-British accent? Ok, so she’s classy. Hyper-feminine? That’s pretty floral. So we want a classy, floral base. What better than Earl Grey? Better still, the splash of blue from the cornflowers brings out the blue in her color scheme.

The Sidekick: Vanilla is smooth, light, and elegant. It goes hand-in-hand with Earl Grey, a delicate pastry at a chic little tea room. We’re also keeping in mind that color scheme, and what does vanilla usually come out as? White! Think Vogue, with its abundance of white space between text and spreads. Very Rarity.

The Accent: But there’s more to this pony than silk and swoons. She has sass. For all her frippery, she is a Pony Of Her Own, thankyouverymuch. And what better way to bring out your inner Ice Queen than with some mint? Peppermint is another blue flavor as well, lighter than cornflower, so from it we get the paler shade of Rarity’s diamond butt stamp. (I mean, “cutie mark.”)

And there you go! Brought to you by the Magic of Friendship.

Don’t overthink it. When concocting your own blend, remember that less is more–you don’t want a whole host of flavors playing the game of thrones for your palate’s attention. Have fun, play with character traits and mouthfeels. What does wildness taste like? What about timidity?

When it comes down to it, tea gives us feelings. Fandom gives us feelings. Put your fandom-feelings into your tea, and nothing can go wrong.
